Film Reservation System:

A New York City firm was the leader in the low-ticket, low-repeat US film lending business, but it was being choked by paperwork.

The objective was to identify and eliminate the bottlenecks that were preventing the firm from achieving it's potential.

Morris streamlined operations, eliminated paperwork bottlenecks through just-in-time printing, improved marketing and implemented an improved system for order entry and order processing. He designed and implemented a fully integrated, on-line Inventory Control and Reservation system. He was responsible for every phase of the project, from initial system concepts and hardware suitability through systems and forms design, programming, operator training and documentation, as well as implementation and final testing. The system initially processed up to 900 reservations per day against an inventory of over 6,000 prints for showings up to 20 months in the future.

Computer hardware had to be upgraded twice in the next 8 years as business volume increased 50 fold with an expanded product line and vastly increased repeat business.

EDI in 3 Weeks - No data, no specs, no requirements, no customer - No Problem!

This classic "Wilderness Exploration" project was internal to a huge corporation. The issues and obstacles were numerous and they crossed departmental lines. Not only that, they were largely unknown at the start of the project.

The project was mandated from on high. Morris was asked, as an outsider, to "make it happen". No one reported to him. No one was obliged to do what he asked. No one was obliged to cooperate in any way.

Under the circumstances, this could easily have become a death march project. Instead, it became the company's only EDI success that year. The turns, the twists, the details -- are too numerous to be told here. If you are interested in them, get the book.

'ToolKit' Industrial Maintenance Management System:

The firms listed below (and many others) were suffering significant lost production time and high repair costs resulting from frequent breakdowns of equipment.

Morris assembled a consortium of ten firms to address this problem, devised a business solution to the problem, translated that solution into system requirements and business practices, managed the design, development, testing, sale and implementation of the resulting "ToolKit" Maintenance Management software for manufacturing plants.

His firm won the Canadian Software Award for this pioneering effort. The design, development and QC techniques enabled the software to be offerred with a money back guarantee. The software was licensed by the following firms:

  • American Standard
  • Carlton Cards (multiple plants)
  • Cascades Dominion
  • Courtaulds
  • Domtar (multiple plants)
  • Finlay Forest Industries
  • International Waxes
  • Johnson Wax
  • Southam Murray Printing
  • Trico (multiple plants)
  • Union Felt
  • Upjohn Pharmaceuticals
  • Waltec Faucets
  • Zochem None of these ever asked for a refund. The data warehousing / data mining capabilities of the system enabled one firm doubled their equipment and output while decreasing maintenance personnel by attrition, savings estimated to exceed $1,000,000 annually. Another firm reduced unplanned downtime 33% in 6 months. Yet another reduced stores inventory by $30,000 in 2 months.

  • Death Valley Expedition:

    Morris...
Once again it was a hike to remember...and with no injuries.
You are certainly the phenomenal leader when it comes to hiking. You amaze me how you outline our hike choosing the best of the area for the time allotted.
It seems like everything just kinda clicks together from your preparation and experience.
We thank you and we're waiting on your next invitation....

    Judy
